[1:24]  1 tn Heb “the master, the Lord who commands armies [traditionally, the Lord of hosts].” On the title “the Lord who commands armies,” see the note at v. 9.

[1:24]  2 tn Heb “the powerful [one] of Israel.”

[1:24]  3 tn Heb “console myself” (i.e., by getting revenge); NRSV “pour out my wrath on.”

[1:24]  4 sn The Lord here identifies with the oppressed and comes as their defender and vindicator.

[7:11]  5 tn Heb “Make it as deep as Sheol or make it high upwards.” These words suggest that Ahaz can feel free to go beyond the bounds of ordinary human experience.

[30:15]  6 tn Heb “in returning and in quietness you will be delivered.” Many English versions render the last phrase “shall be saved” or something similar (e.g., NAB, NASB, NRSV).

[30:15]  7 tn Heb “in quietness and in trust is your strength” (NASB and NRSV both similar).

[42:6]  8 tn Heb “call you in righteousness.” The pronoun “you” is masculine singular, referring to the servant. See the note at 41:2.

[42:6]  9 tn The translation assumes the verb is derived from the root נָצַר (natsar, “protect”). Some prefer to derive it from the root יָצַר (yatsar, “form”).

[42:6]  10 tn Heb “a covenant of people.” A person cannot literally be a covenant; בְּרִית (bÿrit) is probably metonymic here, indicating a covenant mediator. The precise identity of עָם (’am, “people”) is uncertain. In v. 5 עָם refers to mankind, and the following reference to “nations” also favors this. But in 49:8, where the phrase בְּרִית עָם occurs again, Israel seems to be in view.

[42:6]  11 sn Light here symbolizes deliverance from bondage and oppression; note the parallelism in 49:6b and in 51:4-6.

[42:6]  12 tn Or “the Gentiles” (so KJV, ASV, NIV); the same Hebrew word can be translated “nations” or “Gentiles” depending on the context.

[45:24]  13 tn Heb “‘Yes, in the Lord,’ one says about me, ‘is deliverance and strength.’”

[45:24]  14 tn Heb “will come to him and be ashamed.”

[51:1]  15 tn Or “righteousness” (KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV); NAB “justice”; NLT “hope for deliverance.”

[51:1]  16 tn Heb “the excavation of the hole.”

[51:1]  17 sn The “rock” and “quarry” refer here to Abraham and Sarah, the progenitors of the nation.

[56:4]  18 tn Heb “and take hold of” (so KJV); NASB “hold fast.”

[58:4]  19 tn Heb “you fast for” (so NASB); NRSV “you fast only to quarrel.”

[58:4]  20 tn Heb “and for striking with a sinful fist.”

[65:15]  21 tn Heb “you will leave your name for an oath to my chosen ones.”

[65:15]  sn For an example of such a curse formula see Jer 29:22.
